Mullein: The Soft Leaf With a Long History
Mullein is a tall plant with soft leaves, and it has more nicknames than almost any herb.
A plant in two acts
Mullein spends its first year as a rosette of wide, silvery leaves. In its second year it grows a tall spike of small yellow flowers, sometimes taller than a person.
A plant of many names
- Flannel plant and velvet plant, for the soft leaves.
- Candlewick plant, because dried stalks were once dipped in fat and burned.
- Verbascum thapsus, its botanical name.
Where it grows
Mullein is native to Europe and Asia and now grows across North America in open fields and along roadsides.
How an extract is made
Leaves are picked, dried and processed. A 10:1 extract means about 10 parts of dry leaf made 1 part of extract.
